Statistics of Neutral Regions during Hydrogen Reionization
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present predictions for two statistical measures of the hydrogen reionization process at high redshift. The first statistic is the number of neutral segments identified in spectra of high-redshift QSOs as a function of their length. The second is the cross-correlation of neutral regions with possible sources of ionizing radiation. These independent probes are sensitive to the topology of the ionized regions. If reionization proceeded from highto low-density regions, then the cross-correlation will be negative, while if voids were ionized first we expect a positive correlation and a relatively small number of long neutral segments. We test the sensitivity of these statistics for reionization by stars in high-redshift galaxies. The flux of ionizing radiation emitted from stars is estimated by identifying galaxies in an N-body simulation using a semianalytic galaxy formation model. The spatial distribution of ionized gas is traced in various models for the propagation of the ionization fronts. A model with ionization proceeding from highto low-density regions is consistent with the observations of Becker et al., while models in which ionization begins in the lowest density regions appear to be inconsistent with the present data. Further data are required to confirm this result. Fluctuations in 21cm Emission After Reionization
The fluctuations in the emission of redshifted 21cm photons from neutral intergalactic hydrogen will provide an unprecedented probe of the reionization era. Conventional wisdom assumes that this 21cm signal disappears as soon as reionization is complete, when little atomic hydrogen is left through most of the volume of the inter-galactic medium (IGM). However observations of damped Lyα absorber...

0556-2821=20 During the transition from a neutral to a fully reionized universe, scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons via free electrons leads to a new anisotropy contribution to the temperature distribution. If the reionization process is inhomogeneous and patchy, the era of reionization is also visible via brightness temperature fluctuations in the redshifted 21 cm line emi...
متن کاملCross-correlation studies as a probe of reionization physics
The process of reionization is now believed to have proceeded in an orchestrated manner beginning with UV photons emitted by high redshift galaxies containing a large fraction of Population III stars carving out ionised regions around them. The physics during this era can be studied with a combination of redshifted 21-cm spin-flip transition tracing neutral hydrogen gas, IR emission from massiv...
متن کاملThe Topology of Reionization
Using the largest cosmological reionization simulation to-date (∼24 billion particles) , we use the genus curve to quantify the topology of the neutral hydrogen distribution on scales ≥ 1Mpch as it evolves during cosmological reionization. We find that the reionization process proceeds primarily in an inside-out fashion, where higher density regions become ionized earlier than lower density reg...
متن کاملProbing patchy reionization through tau-21cm correlation statistics
We consider the cross-correlation between free electrons and neutral hydrogen during the epoch of reionization. The free electrons are traced by the optical depth to reionization τ while the neutral hydrogen can be observed through 21 cm photon emission. As expected, this correlation is sensitive to the detailed physics of reionization. Foremost, if reionization occurs through the merger of rel...
